The prize is an initiative of the European GNSS Agency (GSA) under the auspices of the European Union (EU). The GSA works with the European Commission on a range of market development activities aimed at helping European entrepreneurs and businesses commercially exploit EGNOS and Galileo. Such promotional activities will ensure that European industry maintains a competitive edge in the global satellite navigation marketplace.

The EEA is an agency of the European Union tasked with providing sound, independent information on the environment. It is a major information source for those involved in developing, adopting, implementing and evaluating environmental policy, and also for the general public. The EEA’s mandate is:

  • To help the Community and member countries make informed decisions about improving the environment, integrating environmental considerations into economic policies and moving towards sustainability;

  • To coordinate the European environment information and observation network.

Proper management of environment and cultural heritage needs amongst other timely and accurate information on land cover and land cover changes, which is why  the EEA is also in charge of the implementation of the land monitoring service of Copernicus: http://land.copernicus.eu, and of the Copernicus in situ data coordination.

The competition organisers are grateful for the support of the following organisations in raising awareness of the Farming by Satellite Prize:

Copernicus is the most ambitious Earth observation programme to date. It will provide accurate, timely and easily accessible information to improve the management of the environment, understand and mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure civil security.

Galileo is the European global satellite-based navigation system.

EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) is Europe's first concrete venture into satellite navigation. Essentially a ‘pre-Galileo' system, EGNOS uses geostationary satellites and a network of ground stations to receive, analyse and augment GPS, and in the next version Galileo signals.

aerospace valley

The guiding purpose of Aerospace Valley is to leverage the competitiveness and visibility of its some 644 members, both on the national and international scene, as well as to optimize the attractiveness of the Aquitaine and Midi-Pyrénées regions, by fostering the development of networks and collaborative initiatives.

Aerospace Valley fulfils this mission by leveraging the two regions’ assets in terms of research, innovation, and know-how, by supporting the growth of SMEs and by fostering cooperation between SMEs, industry leaders, investors, and research organizations.

The Centre for Satellite Navigation Hesse (www.cesah.com) is located in close vicinity to the European Space Operations Centre ESOC and manages the ESA Business Incubation Centre (ESA BIC) Darmstadt. The centre supports the development of business ideas and start-up companies with a focus on Satellite Navigation and Geoinformation. In addition, cesah is also the ESA Technology Transfer Broker for Germany.
